Sentinels of the Hebrides

I wonder about the stories these stones could tell. Were they used for ceremonial purposes as so many of the stones and artifacts from other early sites in the world? Or could they have designated man’s relation to the universe? We can only surmise. Some of the stones were lost during the years, plowed up to make way for agricultural fields, used for building stone structures, or utilized in some other way that man created. After 3500 years, their stone planes have been worn by the elements, but they still stand as mystical sentinels to remind the inhabitants of the Hebrides of those who walked the land long before creating the culture of the islands. I saw some of these stones at Benbecula, South Uist several years ago when I visited a long time English friend now residing in the Hebrides. Along with the pillars of Stonehenge, these mystery pillars have haunted me all these years. This painting is a tribute to those early people and to these sentinels left behind.
